CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Social Development Visiting Lecturer in Residence at the School of Social
Work and Green College, University of British Columbia

The School of Social Work and Green College at The University of British Columbia,
Vancouver campus invite applications for the position of Social Development
Visiting Lecturer in Residence in the academic year 2018-2019. This short-term
position offers the opportunity for a scholar or practitioner or human rights activist from
a country in the Global South to be in residence at UBC for 2-3 months during Term 2
of the 2018 Winter Session (January-April 2019). The Visiting Lecturer will participate in
the intellectual and social life of a graduate residential college with a mandate for
interdisciplinary studies as well as in the academic life and community engagements of
the School of Social Work. The position aims to facilitate exchange on research and
practice oriented projects related to global, social, and community development and
social policy.

Building upon a foundation of social justice and an ethic of care, the School of Social
Work
(SSW) is actively engaged in the development of critical, transformative knowledge
for social work practice and research. Based on a commitment to fundamental social
work values and a vision of social justice, the SSW prepares students for generalist and
advanced practice. The School offers a Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Social Work and
its faculty members advance research and teaching in topics related to mental health and
critical psychiatry, immigration and refugees, critical disability, social policy, historical
memory, criminal justice, indigenous social welfare and international and social
development. For further information, visit: https://socialwork.ubc.ca/

Green College is a graduate residential college founded on the philosophy of “Ideas and
Friendship.” The College is home to about 90 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows
every year, along with visiting scholars, journalists, writers-in-residence, etc. The mandate
of the College is to foster connections outside of traditional discipline-specific discourse. It
does this primarily through public lectures and events designed to promote the free
exchange of ideas, whether at formal talks in the Coach House, over long-table dinners in
the Great Hall, or at fireside chats with leading academics and public figures. For further
information, visit: greencollege.ubc.ca.

The Visiting Lecturer Program is supported by a fund established with a generous gift
from the estate of Professor Emeritus, Dr. Richard B. Splane. The Social Development
Visiting Lecturer is expected to strengthen UBC capacity in global social policy and social
and community development and to foster collaboration across UBC and with local
communities where there are similar strengths and interests. Several units at UBC (the
Office of Regional and International Community Engagement, the School of Community
and Regional Planning, Green College, and the School of Social Work) support this
initiative and will encourage their faculty, students and staff to participate in related
events and open space for exchange and networking.
