In this talk, Ian Gill illustrates how the Haida’s epic battle to reclaim their homeland – with victories of varying degrees – is having a major impact on government, legislation and natural resource management. His recent book, All That We Say Is Ours: Guujaaw and the Reawakening of the Haida Nation, explores three themes: the social and political context of the Haida; the making of a political activist and artist in the profile of the trailblazing, charismatic Haida leader, Guujaaw; and the compelling case for the conservation of Haida Gwaii, otherwise known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. From high-risk roadblocks to Supreme Court claims for land, water and seabed title, Gill recounts pivotal, dramatic moments in the Haida’s fight for self-determination.
