RESIDENT'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH AWARDED

RESIDENT'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH AWARDED
Marc Schutzbank’s Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, which helps create schoolyard market gardens, was awarded $50,000.

Masters of Science candidate in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and Green College Resident Marc Schutzbank along with colleague Ilana Labow were awarded first prize—$50,000—for their Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society. Fresh Roots creates equitable access to healthy food and educates communities through engaging, innovative neighborhood farms, including most recently schoolyard market gardens.

The Good Money Impact Venture Challenge competition was launched by VanCity to help post-secondary students and recent post-secondary graduates grow businesses that are creating positive social and environmental impact in BC.

"We are thrilled to have been selected as first prize in VanCity's Impact Venture Challenge," says Marc. "VanCity's support not only allows us to financially support the growth of neighborhood market gardens, but also reinforces the fact that urban farming and urban agriculture are a critical and viable component to our food system. We are excited to expand our reach to three schools this year, where we will work with students and teachers to utilize outdoor learning space to teach BC curriculum."
